I just wanted to say, having lived in Europe for several years, I grew to love the safety, ease, and relative comfort of high-speed rail. The seats were comfortable, you could fall asleep in Germany and wake up in Rome, have a great day of shopping and be home the same evening without concern about traffic stau or staying awake and worrying about directions. We desperately need better High Speed Rail as well as a Light Rail System from Fredericksburg to VAB!

The dearth of passenger rail in Virginia and the inadequacies of Amtrak in general are among my favorite soapboxes. I am constantly frustrated by the company’s lack of vision during this era of mammoth possibility. With security frustrations in airports, constant flight delays, and exploding concern over global warming, this could be rail's resilient second act in America.

The purpose of this trip was to join my wife in Norfolk (on Friday, 11 May) so that we could drive back together on Sunday, avoiding the use of two cars.

Passenger Error: passenger naively assumed that train transport to Norfolk existed. After investigating the train schedule for awhile, it became apparent that the train only goes as far as Newport News. There is no tunnel for the train between Newport News (or elsewhere) and Norfolk.

The train was about an hour late departing Staples Mill Road.
